This Thick and Frosty Keto Chocolate Shake is my new low carb best friend.
I love a thick, chocolaty, icy cold shake. You know, – like a Wendy’s Frosty or a custom shake from an ice cream parlor. It’s something I’ve really missed while going low carb.
I’ve tried a number of pre-packaged shakes and powders, especially those with protein in them. You know as well as I do that they pale in comparison to their evil sugary cousins.
So I set out on a quest to make a Thick and Frosty Keto Chocolate Shake that is satisfying and delicious. I feel I’ve succeeded and I’m sharing my the recipe I’ve developed with you.
Here are the ingredients I use. Most of them you can find on the shelf at your local grocery store.
The powdered cream is something I order from Amazon. You can find it here.
You can swap out the powdered cream for fresh cream but it will add 20 calories to the total. Carbs stay the same.
Here is what plain gelatin looks like when you sprinkle it over cold water. You allow it to sit for about two minutes to soften up before adding the hot water. You’ll note this is exactly the opposite of what you do with a package of flavored gelatin.
This is what it looks like when you stir in the very hot water. It loses it’s cloudiness. I usually add the vanilla at this point.
Plain gelatin is very versatile and a fun thing to experiment with. It adds zero carbs and 2 gms protein per packet. It is the essential secret ingredient that makes this shake thick.
I dump all the dry ingredients into a small blender jar. I then pour the liquid gelatin and vanilla into the blender and spin them up until they are well blended, about 30 seconds.
Customize at this point if you wish. Add in any other ingredients like melted coconut oil, peanut butter or protein powder etc. You can turn this snack into a meal replacement.
You should add the ingredients to either the liquid or the dry ingredients depending on what they are. Just remember to add up carbs, macros or whatever you are keeping track of to the shake total.
After the wet and dry ingredients are mixed, I open the blender jar and add in the crushed ice.
The Ninja blender I’m using pulverizes ice to a beautifully slushy consistency. I just pulse the ice in the blender until it is obvious to me that the ice is completely incorporated.
Blending takes less than a minute with my blender. Blenders vary in their efficiency so blend until you are certain that all the ice and ingredients are incorporated.
Below is what it looks like when I open the jar. So thick, so creamy and cold.
I can hardly wait to pour it into a glass. Do not lick the blades. They are sharp! (And no, this is not experience speaking, but it is mommy-type concern and caution! 😉 )
Serving tip: If you don’t wish to have such a thick shake or use a spoon, just use half of a gelatin packet (1/2 tablespoon).
Here is my Thick and Frosty Keto Chocolate Shake. I often have to use a spoon for the first few minutes because it is soooo thick. If you use less gelatin it will still have a shake consistency it won’t be as gloriously thick but can be poured into a portable covered container for sipping on the go. Enjoy! — Laura
